Uvita was ungodly hot -- so hot that we really couldn't enjoy the sights. Even the ocean is hot. An airconditioned hotel room is a must! Even if there are many interesting birds and animals here, unless you have a high heat tolerance, you'll likely be miserable.

It wasn’t my favorite place in Costa Rica.
It wasn’t my favorite place in Costa Rica. Part of the problem was that it was so unbearably hot. I couldn’t go out and walk around comfortably. I didn’t go to the beach because of the heat and that would’ve been a big attraction also although my hotel was not far from town because of the heat again I found it unbearable to walk into town and walk around which I’d like to do when I’m traveling, so basically, my problems with AveUvita were weather related

Uvita is not the typical beach town, as it's very spread out and you need a car or a taxi to move around. In Uvita, you can visit the Marino Ballena National Park, which is possibly the most famous attraction in the area, where you can do whale-watching boat tours and other water sports tours like snorkeling and scuba diving.
We visited the Marino Ballena National Park and found its whale-shaped beach very suggestive and unique. However, we were also very underwhelmed by the poor housekeeping of the park. There was rubbish everywhere and this is disappointing and upsetting given that this is supposed to be a protected natural reserve and you also pay for the access at a substantial price per person, which should guarantee thorough housekeeping.
We went also to Playa Hermosa on our way to Uvita, but the amount of signs warning visitors of possible thieves, ruins a little bit of the vibe and it's not very relaxing having to watch your back all the time. Overall the beach is very nice and nothing happened to us. Since Playa Hermosa is also free to access, we recommend a visit, at least a stop by.

The beach and marine park area are well worth visiting.
The beach and marine park area are well worth visiting. Costs approx $6 which is very reasonable for Costa Rica. We saw humpback whales and heard them singing on our boat tour. We also snorkelled. It wasn't the right season for dolphins (they come in autumn).
There is not much to Uvita itself. It's very spread out and hard to walk around. Most of the roads are unpaved and dusty. It's perfect for a bike though. Many places (including the marine park) close down at 6pm, including most of the tour operators. The restaurants are good. There is a yoga place there but it only seems to have classes Mon-Wed.
The Tracopa bus service in the area (and from SJ) is very comfortable, punctual and reasonably priced. However you really need a car to explore the area properly - waterfalls etc.

There was not a ton to do right in Uvita.
There was not a ton to do right in Uvita. If I were to return to Costa Rica, I would spend more time in LaFortuna, Manuel Antonio, and perhaps stay in Jaco, which we avoided as we heard it was too touristy.

Its a fun little town with great restaurants, walkable (or bikable) and a fun beach with small waves to play in. The beach charges $ to access, but this can be walked around.
However...
This is a rural community of Ticos with meager earnings and the town is now cropping up with lots of expensive homes, I suspect many from outsiders. I found this disparity unsettling and I felt like I was adding to the injustice by visiting.
Keith and Joe have created a tranquil paradise in the hills above Uvita. Already before you arrive they open conversation to check for any special needs or interest you might have during your stay. Their level of hospitality and attention for details in and around the Casitas create a superb experience at another level! I loved every moment of my stay! Joe's freshly cooked breakfast at the pool can compete with the best.
Besides that the hosts are super friendly which made me feel at home.
Highly recommended!
This was my first trip to Costa Rica. Our first airbnb did not work out but finding and booking at Gaia Ecolodge saved the trip! This personal villa had air conditioning, a great shower, king size be and was very clean. The pool was nice. The onsite bar and restaurant is amazingly delicious- having breakfast included was an added bonus. Also the best pina colada I've ever had! Would absolutely stay here again!
Beautiful villa. Nice and light. Very quiet location with the national park/ beach right outside the property. Just a few blocks away the town is much more urban, but here there are toucans and white faced monkeys across the street.
The very best part is the on site restaurant. Best meal I had in one month in Costa Rica.
I really loved the attention to detail in this property.
Fridge and coffee machine in the room and the shared kitchen was clean and well equipped with everything you need! The pool was lovely and the Italian restaurant was some of the best Italian I have ever eaten! Quick walk to the beach. Sylvia was very kind and responsive and gave us many great suggestions of things to do in the area! Would absolutely stay here again!
It was a great location away from the bustle of Uvita. We saw large families of howler monkey'a from our deck and white face monkeys. The rooms were comfortable and the deck was a nice place to relax. The pool area was a nice place to relax after a busy day. Breakfast was included and one of the best! Thank you for your hospitality. Dale and Eric
Location was absolutely perfect. 5 minute walk to a stunning beach, amazing restaurants all around. Very safe area for families or female travelers. Best area in Uvita in my opinion. Flutterby has the nicest staff as well, the owner was so kind and friendly. The hostel has clean rooms and is immersed in nature. Great value for your money.
Flawless experience, meticulous attention to detail, spotless rooms and the complete hotel area, and an overall fantastic atmosphere. The hosts were exceptionally friendly and caring, and the breakfast was very good and changed every day. Without a doubt, this was the best accommodation during our travels in Costa Rica. Thank you!
The hotel staff were exceptional. The breakfast was very good and we tried everything on our 4 day stay. The lounge area was relaxing and the music was too! We watched the Howlers and the toucans from our balcony every day. Great very of them water and close enough to hear the surf. And Playa Hermosa had some serious surf!
Breakfast was not included, but plenty of bagel places nearby. I was very pleased with the accommodations. Loved the pool. It's so hot in Costa Rica. Great AC. The owner was very welcoming and friendly. We like to stay in owner owned hotels. Much more personal and gave great restaurant suggestions.
What an incredibly unique place. A very good value for money hostel/hotel just a short walk or taxi ride outside uvita. Lovely staff, clean facilities, terrific chillout spots, amazing terraces, a super kitchen for guests to use, and all in a very jungley location.
We had an amazing stay ! Great location, quiet at night, clean, and a fantastic property. We did not have a car, and got around to restaurants, waterfall and the national park by foot. Sylvain answered all our questions and helped us get the best holiday in Uvita.
Location was excellent being in town Uvita, walkable to the whales tail. The staff let us keep our vehicle in their parking lot, so we could walk down to the whales tail and check it out before we left town.
Unique and specious stand alone villa which is great. Beautiful and secure property. Convenient location. The owners take pride in the facility and desire for all aspects to be the best.
Very charming staff, beautiful rooms and excellent amenities. The views from the room or the lobby are stunning. This hotel make us felt in love with Uvita.
